Background

Poor sanitation and hygiene are health concerns in rural South Sudan villagesthat lead to diseases responsible for 17% of all deaths of children under the age of five (World Health Organization). Lou-Ariik is a village in rural South Sudan of approximately 60,000 people, 75% of whom are below the age of 30.

The need

There is currently only one health care clinic in the entire Lou-Ariik village, servicing 60,000 people. Staff receive only the most basic of training, little equipment and insufficient medical supplies. The closest hospital is at Warrap Town, about four hours away by car or ten hours by foot. Wau, the nearest city with an airstrip and a teaching hospital, is a further three-hourdrive from Warrap Town, and nearly a week of walking from Lou Ariik Village.

Solution

To address this situation we will construct and equip a small broad-based medical clinic in the village of Lou-Ariik. Whist the clinic is under construction, we will employ and coach a small team of medical professionals whose focus will be providing immediate and ongoing health care and support to Lou-Ariik village and its surrounding area. Service to be provided will include:
Z
Educating the community on hygiene, nutrition and fertility control
Z
Conducting immunisationclinics onsite and in areas such as cattle camps
Z
Training traditional birthing aides/midwives to identify risk factors needing further medical care
Z
Conducting maternal/child health clinics and home visits
Z
Transporting patients to a hospital.
